Churches play a vital role in disaster recovery. The Body of Christ is not only IN the community—we ARE the community, and we are called to minister to our neighbors.
The first thing churches should do, is prepare (individually and as a corporate body), so that they can respond to others. Survivors will look to the church to take the lead and to be there for the community. After all, we will still be in the community long after the rest of the world moves on to the next disaster, in the next town.
Additionally, church members should be ready to respond and help with recovery in the months and years following the disaster through long-term recovery.
